O-Gauge - B&O Legacy EM-1 #7609

"Well, I must say, they have everything!" Such were the remarks of B&O's President White upon inspecting the first EM-1. Despite a preference for diesels, the B&O was allocated the new steam locomotives by the Wartime Production Board. They would be the last and largest steam locomotives delivered to the B&O and many argued they were among the best. Equipped with all of the most advanced features available for the time, the powerful locomotives were designed to make use of every inch of space allotted by the B&O's tight clearance restrictions. Although they were built for drag freight operations on the B&O's mountain routes in southwestern Pennsylvania and West Virginia, the locomotives found their way into a variety of roles before retirements in 1957 including some mail and express and passenger excursions. Smaller than their older 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone cousins in the west due to tight tunnel and bridge clearances, the EM-1 was no less impressive. Crews respected them for their power, efficiency and especially smooth ride. Ultimately, their reign on the mountains would be brief - snuffed out by the diesels the B&O always wanted. Like the prototype, these Lionel models have everything you could want! Equipped with both LEGACY and Bluetooth, they are easy to control from your LEGACY or TMCC cab, Universal Remote, LionChief App or transformer. Dual speakers make great use of LEGACY RailSounds and the model is equipped with stack and whistle steam effects. Control switches are all conveniently located under the sand dome. For this release, Lionel has added some "what if" schemes to this good looking locomotive. The EM-1's roles in mail and excursion service led us to imagine what one may have looked like in proper B&O dress blue. DM&IR and Northern Pacific both rostered larger 2-8-8-4s. We've added front air pump details and centipede tenders where appropriate to better capture the look of those machines. Several of the DM&IR locomotives were leased to the Rio Grande - making for a very plausible green-boilered 2-8-8-4. Lastly, Union Pacific's love of big steam and Western Maryland's parallel route through the mountains made the EM-1 design a natural "should have been" for these roads as well.

O-Gauge - Daylight Auxiliary Water Tank

With water stops fewer and farther between than during the heyday of steam, a former New York Central Mohawk tender was converted for use as an auxiliary tender for the American Freedom Train in 1975. The car wore two different paint schemes during the eastern travels of the train in 1975 and 1976 behind the former Reading T1. The same tender was later used behind the Chessie Steam Special and was also planned for the Conrail steam program which never materialized. Now you can add this important piece of the consist to your excursion trains! These tenders come complete with RailSounds which play additional crew dialog for before and after the day's excursion run as well as background sounds while in motion. Tenders also include a working rear light and ElectroCoupler!

O-Gauge - New Jersey Central Legacy 4-6-6T #231

In need of specialized locomotives for its Boston commuter service, the Boston & Albany purchased five 4-6-6T locomotives from Alco in 1928. The locomotives were designed for rapid acceleration, adequate power for heavy trains of up to 20 cars and perhaps most uniquely – to be operated equally well in either forward or reverse. Not having to turn the locomotives at the end of the line saved space and cost and also a lot of time. The locomotives bore a strong resemblance to the New York Central's Hudson in the front, with a small attached "tender" behind the cab riding on a shared 6-wheel trailing truck. Coal and water capacity was adequate for the commuter runs. The D1-A class served the railroad and Boston's workers well for two decades before being replaced by diesels. Although these locomotives were unique to the B&A / NYC, there were similar designs used on other railroads with the same needs. Given the success they had in Boston, it is not hard to imagine these fascinating locomotives racing along at rush hour in cities around the country. With their unique look and size, these locomotives are the perfect power for passenger trains on any model railroad!

O-Gauge - Santa Fe Legacy 4-8-4 #3757

Baldwin delivered the Santa Fe's first 4-8-4, #3751, in 1927. After a year of evaluation, 13 additional locomotives followed. The Santa Fe would go on to place three more orders over the next two decades and rebuilt the original class with many of the improvements in design found on these later locos over the years. These Northerns were used on priority passenger and mail trains until being bumped to secondary assignments by diesels. Such was the success of this class that two were set aside for preservation, Nos. 3751 and 3759. 3751 returned to the rails in 1991, running many excursions through 2017 and is currently undergoing its 15 year boiler inspection. Although the Santa Fe never streamlined any of its 4-8-4's, there were plans to do so. No. 3765 was intended to wear a two-tone blue and silver shroud similar to Hudson #3460. Plans were dropped before the locomotive was delivered, although it had already been given a new pilot and stainless steel handrails which it carried the rest of its career as a reminder of what could have been. In that spirit, Lionel offers another hint at what one of these stylized locomotives could have looked like with our special "Blue Goose" inspired #3765. Three additional road numbers, including the two survivors, are offered in the more standard but still stately Santa Fe colors. All of these locomotives feature the latest in LEGACY and Bluetooth control, sounds and smoke effects and will look right at home pulling new heavyweight or streamlined passenger trains on your layout!

O-Gauge - SOUTHERN PACIFIC SCALE 2-8-8-4 AC-9 #3809 (TMCC)

O-Gauge - SOUTHERN PACIFIC SCALE 2-8-8-4 AC-9 #3809 (TMCC)

On a railroad known for oil burners and cab-forwards, the coal burning Southern Pacific AC-9 class proved to be quite a unique motive power fleet. On the tunnel-free and coal- rich Rio Grande Division, a conventional design was needed, so the railroad flipped the wheel arrangement of its successful 4-8-8-2 creating a "backward" cab forward. In 1939, twelve of the Lima-built 2-8-8-4s began hauling heavy freight and passenger consists on the Rio Grande Division. Producing 6,000 horsepower, they streaked across the Southwest at a top speed of 75 miles per hour. This new scale-sized model represents the first time that this significant articulated locomotive has ever been modeled in die-cast O gauge. The new Southern Pacific AC-9 has a long list of some of the latest Lionel features such as an improved Odyssey System for speed control with ON/OFF switch and synchronized smoke. The RailSound sound system even includes the locomotive's unique auxiliary air horn.

O-Gauge - VIRGINIAN - USRA 2-8-8-2 #741 - TMCC

O-Gauge - VIRGINIAN - USRA 2-8-8-2 #741 - TMCC

In 1919, the American Locomotive Company built forty-five 2-8-8-2 steam locomotives to the specifications of the United States Railway Administration. These locomotives were the biggest that the USRA had ever designed and were destined for the Norfolk & Western Railway. Built for slow, steady drag freight service up steep mountain grades, the 2-8-8-2 locomotives were a perfect choice for Appalachian coal hauling service. Among these articulated giants, known as the N&W Y-3 class, was ALCO construction number 61097, a locomotive that would have a long career on both Eastern and Western railroads. Lionel is proud to introduce c/n 61097 in both of her later liveries, as Santa Fe #1795 and as Virginian #741. ----Many railroads adopted the USRA-designed 2-8-8-2 locomotives, but the master mechanics of N&W's Roanoke Shops made further refinements that gave their Y-3 class a distinctive N&W "look" throughout their long lives. The modifications included: mounting Worthington feedwater heaters on the fireman's side, moving the air pumps from the smokebox front to the fireman's side, replacing the restrictive oval smokebox door with a large, maintenance-friendly, round door and exchanging the small eight-wheel USRA tender with a distinctive twelve-wheeler of N&W design. ----Unlike most railroads, the ever-frugal N&W was able to maintain a surplus of steam locomotives during the Depression years of the 1930s. After almost a quarter century on the N&W, nineteen Y-3 locomotives were sold to other railroads at the behest of the federal government. World War II had begun and the rail traffic of fighting men and material had reached a fever pitch. Especially hard hit by the motive power shortage were Western railroads such as the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe.----The Santa Fe was not particularly fond of articulated mallet locomotives like the 2-8-8-2, but had little choice as the war heated up in the Pacific and their overwhelmed mainline threatened to come to a standstill. Our prototype became #1795 of the Santa Fe 1790-class. As the accurate repaint stencil on the rear of the tender shows, she began her new life in 1943. The 2-8-8-2 locomotives were used in helper service and on both passenger and freight runs. They shared trains with big steam engines such as 4-8-4 Northerns and with new passenger diesels such as early EMD passenger F-units. The toughest grades, including the 4% Raton Pass, were no problem for the 1790-class, but the 2-8-8-2 locomotives were deemed too slow by Santa Fe's operating department. The 1790-class did do their part for the war effort, freeing up other locomotives from helper and mountain service. However, by war's end, Santa Fe was anxious to be rid of their "boomer" 2-8-8-2s.----In 1947, the Santa Fe found a buyer for its 1790-class when the Virginian Railway purchased seven of the locomotives. Our prototype, formerSanta Fe #1795, became #741 of the Virginian US-E class. Wanting to wring every ounce of power from their investment, the Virginian spent almost a year giving the 28-year-old locomotives a complete overhaul. We have faithfully reproduced many of these modifications on our model of #741. These include: a lowered headlight, vertically slotted pilot and lighted, boiler-top mounted number boards. For almost a decade, the Virginian ran its US-E class in revenue service. Back in the South, the locomotives were back to doing what they did best—slowly and steadily hauling a hundred or so loaded coal hoppers up and down a sawtooth mainline. These incredible locomotives, including our prototype, were finally retired in the mid-1950s after close to four decades of railroading.
